Keanu Reeves has been taking inspiration from Cowboy Bebop’s Spike Spiegel. Not only has he recently been campaigning to get the movie made with him in the lead role, but he’s dressing the part too. Anime fashion definitely isn’t all cosplay: there are characters that are slick, stylish and extremely well dressed. Anime means that there are no limits when it comes to a clothing budget. Garments are tailor-made to fit, fashion-forward and completely unique. Characters are dressed according to their personality – their clothes are a perfect reflection of their soul. When you’re updating your wardrobe, there are some great anime series that can help you personalize your style and present the best version of yourself to the world.

Vampire Knight

If you like some sleek tailoring and a classic suit, then Vampire Knight is for you. Classic black and white are of course eternally on point if you’re one of the undead, but you will still find characters like Zero Kiryu in a sharp navy, complementing his pale skin tone. The layered blazers with sharp collars have a definite nod to Italian design – it’s all about being suave and looking the part. After all, being a bloodsucking vampire is never going to go out of style. A good looking suit will be in fashion, no matter what decade you turn up in, and you’re only going to win over the ladies if you take pride in what you wear.

Paradise Kiss

Of course ParaKiss is fashion-forward: it originally featured as a serial in the Japanese magazine, Zipper. The Yazawa School for the Arts is an anime catwalk of inspiration for your wardrobe. The lead protagonist, Yukari, first arrives at the college straight-laced, naive, and knowing absolutely nothing about the world of fashion. Her clothes are preppy, dainty, and full of ruffles, tank tops and lace. However, far more interesting is Yukari’s best friend, Miwako. She has real fun with her clothing, creating a playful twist on the school girl look. If Miwako designed the uniform for the Yazawa School, it would certainly be pink, possibly with additional glitter. She never goes with the flow, but instead puts exciting twists on classic college wear.

Ouran High School Host Club

Ouran High is a good example of how high concept fashion doesn’t have to be restricted to the woman’s wardrobe. The guys are certainly giving the girls a run for their money. These elite students are certainly dressing to impress. Haruhi is one of the most poignant characters in the series, often rocking the androgynous look. She’s certainly not afraid to mix stark, masculine lines with feminine pieces. Tamaki is another standout in terms of fashion (although sometimes his behavior is a little questionable). He goes for the dramatic and alluring – a ruffled, crimson blouse, paired with slick, striped beach shorts. Check out the accessories too, as this is a man that knows how to wear rings.

We don’t need to take inspiration from supermodels and celebrities to get the perfect wardrobe. With anime there no limits on fashion: you can dress as a reflection of your true personality.
